Jeffrey Epstein, a 66-year-old billionaire financier, was arrested on Saturday in New York City on suspicion of trafficking minor girls for sex in the early 2000s.
He will be in federal court in July 2019 for his case. People who haven’t followed Epstein’s complicated life may look at the news and Epstein’s name confusedly.
But Epstein has a long past as a businessman and a criminal. Now you know everything you need to know about one of New York City’s main billionaires.
Who was Epstein?
Epstein began working as a math teacher at the select Dalton School in New York City. In the 1970s, he moved on to work at the investment bank Bear Stearns, and in 1982, he started his own business, J. Epstein and Co. Vox says he advertised his services to “those with assets worth more than $1 billion” and ran his business out of the U.S. Virgin Islands to save on taxes.
Epstein lived in a vast townhouse and gave large amounts of money to many causes and organizations. He seemed very rich, but people needed to find out where his money came from. Many people have called him a millionaire, but Forbes says he’s worth a fraction of that. A will that Epstein signed just two days before he died says that he was worth $577,672,654.
Epstein admitted to a felony charge of soliciting prostitution involving a minor in 2008 and was given an 18-month prison sentence. He did 13 months and was then given a work release, which let him go to an office outside of jail six days a week. It was also noted that he had a history of sex crimes.
The plea deal was looked at more closely again last winter after Julie K. Brown, an investigative reporter for the Miami Herald, wrote a story about Epstein, his victims, and the influential people who pushed for him to get a lighter sentence of more than ten years ago.

He passed away in his cell.
NBC New York states that Epstein was found injured in his cell on July 24, 2019. Some weeks later, on August 10, he was found dead, and it looked like he had killed himself, according to the New York Times. The FBI is now looking into his death.
On October 30, a forensic doctor who worked for Mark Epstein, Jeffrey’s brother, said he didn’t think Epstein killed himself. On the morning TV show Fox & Friends, Dr Michael Baden said that Mr Epstein, 66, had several injuries that “are very uncommon in suicidal hangings and could occur much more commonly in homicidal strangulation.”
According to the New York Times, Dr. Barbara Sampson, the city’s Chief Medical Examiner, didn’t agree with Dr. Baden’s account. She had already said that he killed himself. NPR says Epstein’s death “effectively ended” the criminal case, but some of the people he is said to have hurt have since sued his heirs.
Why was Jeffrey Epstein put in jail?
Jeffrey Epstein was a financier and convicted sex offender who was arrested in July 2019 on charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy. He was denied bail and remained in jail until his death by suicide in August 2019.
The charges against Epstein stemmed from allegations that he sexually exploited and abused dozens of minor girls at his homes in Manhattan, New York, and Palm Beach, Florida, among other locations. Prosecutors also claimed that Epstein paid sure of his victims to recruit additional girls to be similarly abused.
Epstein’s arrest in 2019 was not his first brush with the law. In 2008, he faced similar charges in Florida, which resulted in a controversial plea deal. However, the new investigation in 2019 involved a broader range of charges and potential victims. If convicted, Epstein would have faced up to 45 years in prison.
