Austin got the shoulder straps of a second lieutenant in 1975. Lloyd’s first job was as a platoon leader in Germany with the third infantry division. After that, he was in charge of a recruiting battalion company in Indianapolis and an airborne battalion company in North Carolina.
Lloyd was in charge of the 10th Mountain Division and the joint task force during the war in Afghanistan in the fall of 2003. He was then sent to run the offices of CENTCOM, which stands for the Central Command of the US Armed Forces. Austin gets a lieutenant general after three years.
