Before Andrew Cuomo resigned as governor of New York due to sexual harassment allegations, she served under him as lieutenant governor from 2015 until 2021. Before that, she served from 2011 to 2013 as the representative for New York’s 26th congressional district, although she was defeated in her campaign for reelection after the district was redistricted to favour Republicans.
She was the eighth Clerk of Erie County, a position she held from April 2007 to June 2011, and she had been a member of the Hamburg Town Board from January 1994.
