Kathy Hochul took office as the 57th governor of New York on August 24, 2021. She is the first woman to hold the governor’s office in New York and the first governor from the state’s upstate region since Nathan L. Miller in 1920.

Before Andrew Cuomo resigned as governor of New York due to sexual harassment allegations, she served under him as lieutenant governor from 2015 until 2021. Before that, she served from 2011 to 2013 as the representative for New York’s 26th congressional district, although she was defeated in her campaign for reelection after the district was redistricted to favour Republicans.

She was the eighth Clerk of Erie County, a position she held from April 2007 to June 2011, and she had been a member of the Hamburg Town Board from January 1994. While running for Congress, Hochul proudly displayed that her donor list included Republican businessmen, small business people, Democrats, and independents, despite her self-description as an “independent Democrat” willing to work beyond party lines.
